After a nearly two year wait, Phonebox arrives on New Motion with their highly anticipated album, "You Hurt Me." A follow up to their breakthrough EP, "Some Mediocre Songs" released in 2020 on No Agreements. Antithetical to the name, it proved to make a mark for the young NYC producer who would immediately begin work on their follow up album. You Hurt Me is the culmination of a years long work and serves to flesh out the foundations they set forth on their debut. A bridge between two different concepts existing in the same world.
Phonebox continues to emphasive their distinctly nocturnal production through hard hitting house beats and deep synth melodies. Their characteristic sampling style and vocaloid flourishes creating a sweetly discordant atmosphere while juxtaposed with melancholic house and tempered future garage grooves. These portraits of dance music paired with synth heavy ambient interludes create a fragmented world that is nightmarish yet oddly comforting.
